Global Big Day (May 11th)
Twice every year, eBird runs an event called Global Big Day. The aim of this event is to try to document as much scientific data about birds from all around the world. Our group participated, and tried to find as many of New Zealand’s unique endemic birds as possible.
Across the world, an astonishing 63,220 people participated worldwide, submitting 156,000 checklists and documenting 7725 species. 82,550 photos were shared and 4,820 audio recordings. 8 of our group members joined in, managing a great total of 74 species from across the country in the 97 checklists we submitted! Several of our members attempted a big day and all of those who did crossed the 50 species mark!
Some of the highlights for us over the day included seeing rarities for the country such as Northern Shoveler, endemic species such as Black-fronted Tern and Brown Teal, and of course the stunning Aurora Australis to finish the day! We managed to hear New Zealand’s two most widespread owls (Little Owl and Ruru) while watching the beautiful skies, which was an incredible way to end the day.
